Unrequited Love 暗恋橘生淮南 Chapter 21.1

Chapter 21.1 - Actually It Was A Tantrum (1)

It was another Saturday law introduction class. Luo Zhi sat in her usual corner, doing a final check on the midterm paper she had to submit.

As she looked up at the podium, she unexpectedly caught sight of Zheng Wenrui standing by the podium, holding a water cup. She placed her paper on the podium and then walked out through the left door to get water.

So, she also chose the dual law degree.

This class was in a lecture hall, and there were so many people that Luo Zhi had never noticed Zheng Wenrui before.

As expected, she showed up, Luo Zhi thought.

Zheng Wenrui walked while twisting the cap, and at the door, she bumped into Sheng Huainan, who was hurriedly entering, spilling water all over him.

But it seemed the water in the cup must have been cold, right?

Luo Zhi couldn't help but smile. It was the first time in days that she really smiled. Sheng Huainan really was fated with water. There were three thousand rivers, but which one did he want? Zheng Wenrui's face turned red, and even from such a distance, it was obvious. Sheng Huainan still smiled politely, waved, and then walked up to the podium to hand in his paper. Zheng Wenrui stood at the door, staring blankly at Sheng Huainan, watching him walk to the back of the room to find his seat, before lowering her head and leaving the classroom in silence.

Luo Zhi felt a bit emotional, but she didn't feel pity—if anyone should pity someone, it should be herself. The difference between her and Zheng Wenrui was simply that Zheng Wenrui would stand there dumbly watching him, while Luo Zhi would just hide the direction of her gaze.

What about Jiang Baili?

Baili didn't break up with Ge Bi. Jiang Baili tightly clutched Ge Bi’s hand. She didn’t care about feelings, nor did she expect a perfect and pure love, but when facing reality, she could still hold his hand tightly, no matter what he was thinking inside.

When you're alive, it doesn't matter who you love. But when you die, you can only be buried together with me.

Luo Zhi felt a bit exhausted from thinking.

She stood up and walked down the steps to hand in her paper.

“Luo Zhi!”

Zhang Mingrui appeared beside her, walking down the steps with her.

“What’s your paper about?” he asked.

“It’s about the origin of medieval marriage systems, kind of related to marriage law history. This professor seems to enjoy talking about fringe topics. How about you?”

“Ah, it’s about constitutions and social systems in various countries… some messy stuff. I just pasted it all from Baidu and Google. I整理ed it a bit. He probably won't notice. I’ve never been good at writing papers since I was a kid.”

They handed in their papers to the teaching assistant, who symbolically flipped through Luo Zhi’s paper, sighed dramatically, and said, “Women, huh.”

She stuck out her tongue at the teaching assistant and smiled brightly.

“Do you know the teaching assistant?” Zhang Mingrui asked.

“No, I don’t,” Luo Zhi replied, resuming her neutral expression.

Zhang Mingrui frowned, staring at her, feeling like women were just too hard to understand.

Just as Luo Zhi was about to wave goodbye, Zhang Mingrui suddenly said, “Can I sit with you?”

She nodded.

“Sheng Huainan, come join us!” Zhang Mingrui turned around and shouted loudly.

Luo Zhi felt a little dizzy for a moment. Sheng Huainan was standing in the aisle, nodding and then smiling at her behind Zhang Mingrui.

What was this about?

She had tried so hard to calm down and tell herself to accept it, but now this? Was the universe trying to play with her?

She looked at Zheng Wenrui, who had just returned to the classroom with her water, and told herself, “Luo Zhi, calm down. Stick to your word.”

She returned to her seat, squeezed two empty seats together, leaving the aisle seat for them. She put on her headphones, played some Joe Hisaishi piano music, and comfortably leaned back in her chair, opening her newly purchased book Eight Million Ways to Die.

Zhang Mingrui and Sheng Huainan came over. Each of them took out a laptop from their bags—Sheng Huainan had a Mac, and Zhang Mingrui had an Asus.

“Hurry up, hurry up, email it to me by 2 PM, okay? How could you forget?” Zhang Mingrui hurriedly opened his laptop.

So that’s why—they didn’t want to be seen opening their laptops blatantly in the front row in case the professor scolded them. Luo Zhi smiled bitterly.

“I didn’t know there was homework,” Sheng Huainan’s voice was a bit sleepy, adorably so.

“You’ve been absent-minded lately.”

The piano music seemed too quiet. Luo Zhi turned up the volume and buried herself in the book.

Whenever she wanted to pretend to be indifferent but found it difficult, she’d read detective novels. They could easily draw her into a trance, making her numb to everything around her.

Until Zhang Mingrui lightly nudged her shoulder. She took off her headphones.

“The teaching assistant is calling the roll,” Zhang Mingrui whispered.

Just as he said that, the teaching assistant loudly called out, “Luo Zhi.”

“Here!” She raised her hand and saw the teaching assistant's mischievous smile. His image was very sleazy, almost like that squirrel in Ice Age, and she couldn’t help but laugh.

Zhang Mingrui asked, “Is that guy hitting on you? He was acting weird when you handed in the paper, and now he’s teasing you from so far away?”

She glanced at him with a half-smile and said, “You’re narcissistic, that’s your problem, but don’t think I’m anything like you,” before shoving her headphones back in.

Sheng Huainan said something, but it was drowned out by the music. She didn’t hear it clearly.

There was a reason for not hearing things, and she believed it was for her own good.

She lowered her head and continued reading.
